Chapter 13

Serena suddenly stopped drawing and her eyes popped open, her body coming back to life with a little jolt. To her surprise, her recall had left her energized and very lucid, instead of drained and disoriented like on previous occasions. She was proud to have controlled the shift better this time. She looked down at the yellow notebook paper that lay underneath her hand, and smiled broadly with satisfaction and awe at her own work.

“So… now what do you think?” she asked, but when Serena looked up to find James, he was gone. Serena looked around. No sign of him.

“James?”

“Up here.”

Serena got up from her seat and turned around. “Where?”

“Here.”

James was waving to Serena from the top of a ladder that stood at the upper left-hand corner of the wall of books. He had a pencil in his mouth and was making his way down to the floor, clutching a book at his side that was so thick she thought it might topple him over. James, however, snaked his way nimbly down with no problem. Upon reaching the bottom rung, he pushed off with his left foot and came sliding towards Serena along the wall, one hand still holding onto the ladder. Serena stepped back and giggled at the sight of James cruising toward her like some kind of surf-hipster-historian. Apparently, the ladder was on wheels.

“Having fun?” she asked when he finally came to rest in front of her. James hopped off the ladder and removed the pencil from his mouth.

“Almost,” said James before heading straight to the table and laying the beefy black book down. With a renewed sense of purpose, he started furiously flipping pages. James took labored breaths with the turn of each page. In the middle of his search, he stopped short and looked at Serena. He placed his hand on the back of her neck.

“You okay?” he asked, giving her a concerned pat on the back.

“Yeah. Much better this time around. What’s going on?”

“I want you to look at something else. Think you’re up to it?”

“I think so.”

“Good enough. Here,” he said, pushing the thick black book in front of Serena. Serena crinkled her nose at the sight of it. If the last book looked like a book of spells, then this one looked like its evil-twin book of curses. Someone must have set fire to the cover at some point; the pages were stained a mottled brown, and the edges gnarled up like it had been though some form of hell. It smelled strange and foul, like it had been dredged up from some dark, dank place.

“Wow, where’d you get this thing? Mordor?”

“Never mind that for right now. Come on. Look through the drawings in this chapter.” James took Serena’s arm and pulled her closer to the table.

“What exactly am I looking for?” she asked, ignoring the quiver that was traveling down her spine.

“I can’t be sure exactly. Just look.” James picked up the pad of paper with Serena’s picture and studied it more closely, tracing the lines with his index finger.
